More than 40 interested citizens turned out at Scrapbook Creations at noon on Tuesday, January 17, for a grass roots discussion on establishing a Pacolet River and Walking Trail in the Clifton and Converse communities.
The group was led by local businessman Scott Macdonald and it heard from Eric Davis, Project Manager for the Spartanburg County Parks Department.
Those gathered are looking to establish trails along the Pacolet River in the old mill towns of Clifton and Converse that mirror the blueway that starts in Glendale at Lawson’s Fork Creek and will eventually be in Converse on the Pacolet River, connecting all areas that abut the Pacolet River.
The county terms this area the Pacolet River Corridor.
The hope is the trail will not only provide health benefits to those on the river and trails but also offer glimpses into the history of the region as well as showcase the natural beauty of the river and riverside and possibly provide an impetus for an economic revitalization.

The two newest members of Spartanburg City Council were sworn into office on Monday at City Hall.
Joining them in being sworn in for his fourth term was Councilman Robert Reeder.
Departing from council were Councilman Joe Spigner and Councilwoman Renee Cariveau.
Spartanburg Mayor Junie White acknowledged it was a “sad time for me to see them leave.”
He thanked Spigner for his “time on the council and the work you’ve done for west side, I know you’ll continue to be involved.
He then turned to Cariveau, and as is his wont, cracked a joke to attempt to lighten the mood.
“Renee,” he said, “let us know and we’ll help you pack your bags.”
The packed council chambers dissolved into laughter until White turned serious.
He told Cariveau, “We want to thank you for all you’ve done for the community. Thank you both we’re going to miss you very much.
The attention then turned to Anderson and Scalisi as they took the oath of office.

A half-page bill prefiled in the state senate in mid-December may hold the key to keeping some violent repeat offenders behind bars, according to the bill’s sponsor and Spartanburg County’s top prosecutor and lawman.
Sen. Shane Martin, R-Spartanburg, was joined by Seventh Circuit Solicitor Barry Barnette and Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright in announcing the proposal at a press conference Friday and said the changes would give prosecutors and law officers a new tool in keeping some of the worst repeat offenders off of the streets.
Since taking office, the sheriff has repeatedly expressed frustration that repeat offenders end up back on the street able to commit new crimes due to shortcomings in the justice system. He said if measures like Martin’s proposal had been in place, it is possible the repeat offender who shot one of his deputies would not have been free to commit that crime.
“I’m speaking for the people of South Carolina – we’re sick and tired of being sick and tired,” Wright said. He added that average citizens also are well and truly tired of being victimized by criminals who pass through the revolving door of a criminal justice system riddled with loopholes.
Barnette said that without the tools afforded to prosecutors by the proposal, it’s hard to keep some career criminals behind bars.
Martin said that a mentor of his was fond of asking him, “What did you do when you knew?” He said when he kept seeing the sheriff at press conferences expressing frustration about career criminals being repeatedly let out of jail, he contacted both Barnette and the sheriff to find out what could be done. Out of those consultations, Martin produced the remarkable half-page bill that would amend the state’s 2/3 strike law by adding certain serious offenses.

The City of Spartanburg and USC Upstate held a joint Arbor Day ceremony where they planted a Chionanthus restusus “Tokyo Tower”, an upright Chinese Fringetree, between the St. John parking garage and the USC Upstate’s George Dean Johnson School of Business on Friday, December 2.
Lamar Davis of Roebuck Wholesale Nursery told the crowd the Tokyo Tower produces white blossoms in the spring, has very dark green lustrous leaves in the summer and turns a beautiful golden yellow in the fall. It also produces blueberries.
He noted, “Many of our landscapes are shrinking so we find a need to find plant material to fit into smaller spaces. We feel the Tokyo Tower will do that (since) it has a narrow upright growth.”

It’s official.
Well, almost.
During the Spartanburg County Council meeting on Monday evening Councilman David Britt, chairman of council’s Economic Recruitment and Development Committee, made the announcement that the Project 300 company was, in fact, online retail giant Amazon.com and would soon call Spartanburg County home.
Hometown News reported last week that the Seattle Washington based company was most likely the Project 300 company.
“Disclosure of the company name does not constitute a commitment” to build a facility, Britt said as he revealed the Project 300 company at Monday night’s council meeting.
He noted the announcement wasn’t official as “we still have to cross some T’s and I’s to dot. It’s in the hands of our lawyers now.”
An agreement on economic incentives between the county and the company should be finalized in the next few days and given final approval by council as soon as this week, said Britt.

The Spartanburg County Legislative Delegation met last Monday and approved $48,942 in spending requests, adopted new policy and procedures for delegation applications to boards and commissions but balked at Governor Nikki Hailey’s request to receive judicial application nominations directly.
Representative Steve Parker spoke to council regarding proposals by the Policy and Procedures Delegation regarding the delegation’s appointments.
Parker presented two new proposals. The first would see a new application processes for boards and commissions appointed by the delegation.
The changes stated those seeking a position “must have personal interviews with the appointing committee of the delegation led by the chairman of the delegation and four members.”
Parker explained, “This just means we’d have a chance to ask any questions we think would be pertinent, and have background information” so we can vet the applicants before making a recommendation to the full legislative delegation.

It was a very special day for the Spartanburg Day School (SDS) on Wednesday, November 9. Hundreds of people gathered under sunny skies on the front lawn of the new Upper School building for its naming ceremony.
They applauded when the Capital Campaign Co-chair and SDS graduate Ricky Richardson divulged the new name of the building as two red and white banners unfurled behind him emblazoned with the name Presnell on them.
Richardson explained how the name Presnell came about. It can be traced back to a family that originated from Morganton, NC that had eight children, two boys and six girls.
The two boys grew up but never had any children so the family name died out. However the girls, Ann, Susan (Sudie), Margaret, Weeta, Mary Burgin, and Julia kept the family tree growing and it now has strong ties to Spartanburg and SDS.
He explained Sudie “was the grandmother of Susu Johnson whose support of educational excellence is all around us.” He added Sudie is the great-grandmother of SDS graduates Geordy and Susanna Johnson.
