Greer Citizen Greer Police Chief Dan Reynolds called the gangs prevention/recognition program presented at Victor United Methodist Church a proactive effort. “We didn’t bring everyone here to scare you to death. We’d rather have people informed, and a little bit scared,” he said.

HOMETOWN NEW In 1928, it supplied all of Greer with fresh drinking water from one pump, a lake, and two freshwater springs. This summer, the obsolete Commission of Public Works water treatment plant on Duke St. will be history, as the building is being demolished to make way for an updated warehouse.

GREER CITIZEN The controversial “design standards” concept for growth management along the Hwy. 290 North corridor remains muddled in confusion following a town hall meeting and public hearing on the proposal. And a solution could be a long way off with the issue not scheduled to reappear before council until October.

Area lawmakers are considering the prospect of a massive upgrading of South Carolina bridges in the wake of the horrific collapse of the I-35W Bridge connecting Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn., during rush hour traffic last Wednesday. The eight-lane bridge, which came tumbling down within seconds, carried 141,000 vehicles a day, carring at least five peole to their deaths and leaving many more unaccounted for in the murky Mississippi River waters. The bridge was deemed “structurally deficient” by the federal government as far back as 1990, and inspections over the years had raised alarm, with findings of rust-eaten steel beams, missing bolts and cracks in the welding that held load-bearing parts together.
