Newberry County residents honored the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by marching on Monday, January 16.  They marched to a theme of “Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On, not a day Off.” Beginning at 9:30 a.m., the march went from Bethlehem Baptist Church on College Street to Miller Chapel AME Church on Caldwell Street in downtown Newberry.  Residents of Whitmire’s Sim’s Chapel Youth Choir sang two songs at the gathering that followed the march.  The church gathering included guest speaker Dr. Timothy Turner, a Newberry High School Graduate who is a professor at the Tuskegee University where he does pioneering research on prostate cancer.  When he was in 4th grade, Turner was one of the first students to integrate Speers Street Elementary School in Newberry.
Around 220 people joined the march including Mayor Foster Senn, Sheriff Lee Foster, and Representative Walt McCleod.  People from as far away as Philadelphia, New Jersey and Columbia, SC marched and listened to speeches with calls for social justice, personal accountability, and responsible citizenship.

Whitmire was one of 11 communities across the state of South Carolina to receive approximately $2.2 million in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). According to the South Carolina Department of Commerce these projects will benefit more than 23,000 residents. Whitmire Mayor Tim Carroll said that the Town Council still had to approve the Town accepting the grant and that the matter would be discussed at the Town Council Meeting on January 9.
“If we take the grant,” Carroll said, “we will be in a noncompetitive grant pool for up to $500,000. The grant mainly has to do with making the area look better by tearing down old houses and maybe fixing up things on the outside of the houses. We may put sidewalk down in areas if needed and perhaps apply funds to streetlights.”
The first part of the grant will be $25,000 for a grant to study to see what can be done to improve these areas. Carroll said the Town will try to do the matching portion of the grant by conducting surveys and doing grading work so the Town does not have to come up with cash money.
Carroll said several community meetings will be held about the grant to get the members input about ways to apply the grant funding and what they would like to see done.

Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster is warning residents to place much less reliance on caller ID.
Foster said scam artists first started using special software to make their calls appear that they were coming from banks or government agencies.
The software then became available on the Internet to everyone making Caller ID even less valuable. Once a fairly reliable way to determine who was calling you and from what number, technology has changed such that Caller ID can be spoofed with advertisements aimed at fooling one’s friends.
Now some of the applications include a male and female voice changer to further disguise a caller.
Sheriff Foster says that the iPhone, Droid and other smart phones have applications that can be downloaded to spoof the telephone number the person is calling from.

Mayor Carroll proposed the Golf Course lease be paid in ten-year increments for $10/10 years rather than a $1/year annual fee as it is now. Council agreed to include that in the ordinance for the American Legion building as well as the golf course lease.

Under the proposed golf course lease, the town will cover maintenance of the main shed that houses the lawn mower but the town will not cover the contents of the building. Mayor Carroll said he would look into the option of the golf course being lumped into the town’s State insurance policy with the Golf Association paying cost. By doing so it is likely they could receive a better rate than if the Golf Course looked for insurance itself. A sublease to the town would be put into the new lease so that sheds could still be leased out to golf course members. The town and golf course would continue to share town property (lawn mower, bush hog, tractor and sand spreader) by mutual agreement.

The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office has identified the body found in the Sumter National Forest on May 25, 2011, as John Henry Mayers, 43, of 210 Skylark Lane, Chapin, SC.  Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton said an autopsy revealed Mayers died of two gunshot wounds to the chest.  A joint investigation by sheriff’s offices in Newberry and Lexington County resulted in Mandy Lenore Smith, 34, of 20138 Highway 76, Newberry and Timothy Carroll Wise, 30, of 21038 Highway 76, Newberry, being arrested and charged with murder on Friday, May 27.  At this time, they both remain in custody waiting to have a bond hearing scheduled with a Circuit Court Judge.
Sheriff Lee Foster said investigators realized the likely relationship between the body and a missing person reported in Lexington County.  He said Lexington County law enforcement provided valuable assets to the investigation including crime scene work, legwork and a helicopter search of the area.
