Rare cancer strikes young family7/3/2008

For a young Wellford family struggling to make ends meet and raise one son and another child on the way, the dire news that their husband and father has been diagnosed with one of the most rare, virulent and difficult to treat forms of cancer has come with such tumultuous suddenness that they find themselves at a loss as to what to do next or to whom to turn.

Training is the backbone of firefighting. It takes over 200 hours of classes just to become a core firefighter: OSHA, Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, hazardous materials, flammable liquids, auto extrication, first aid, and CPR. On top of that, firefighters are required to undergo 20 hours of training a year, eight hours of hazardous material training a year, and a controlled burn every quarter. For volunteers, it’s a challenge to find the time.

That’s how tall Africa is at its highest point, Mount Kilimanjaro, in the East African country of Tanzania. It is one of the tallest free-standing mountains in the world, made up of three extinct volcanoes—Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira—with its highest point at Uhuru Peak on Kibo.
