Local woman has ties to civil rights royalty
Leon G. Russ, Hometown News

Delphine Thornton is a slightly built senior with a quiet voice that commanded much attention when she spoke at the Spartanburg Democratic Party luncheon on Monday.

What did she say that had everyone in attendance leaning forward in their chairs to better hear her?

Thornton related her link to Coretta Scott King and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

She and Coretta were first cousins who “grew up within walking distance” of each other in Marion, Alabama. They attended the same church where Thornton’s mother taught Sunday school while Coretta’s mother played the organ. The girls sang in the choir together after attending Sunday school classes. Thornton related that Coretta was older than her and when college beckoned they grew apart but always managed to stay in touch.

For the rest of the story, see this week’s Spartanburg County News.
