The Spartanburg County Council got its first look at a $154.3 million budget proposal that absorbs yet another significant cut in revenue from the state during the council’s monthly meeting Monday.
County Administrator Glenn Breed told the council during his briefing that producing a balanced budget continues to be a challenge with the ongoing economic hardships and reductions in revenue.
“It continues to get harder and harder to work through these challenging times,” Breed told the council. “We continue to deal with a lot of the same elements.”
He said that among the challenges to producing the budget proposal were the reduction in funding from the state and lower collections on local property taxes – the county’s largest revenue source. He added that continued economic stagnation has reduced the amount of revenue the county receives in permits, fines and fees.
