After more than two months of controversy during which the Spartanburg County Council moved to place the county parks department back under their administration, parks director Jeff Caton was fired Friday.
County Administrator Glenn Breed made the call late Friday afternoon and said the decision came after he spoke with a number of parks employees in what he termed a “staff audit” to gather feedback on the department.
For many the decision was not a surprise given the increasing stridency with which county council members questioned the direction of the department under Caton’s leadership in recent months and culminating in the move to dissolve the parks commission and bring the department firmly back into the fold under the county administrator.
“It was not an easy decision,” Breed said Monday after a staff meeting with parks personnel about where the department is headed from this point forward.
“We’ve got some really talented folks in the parks department and I look forward to utilizing their talents,” Breed said.
