Move would simplify process, save towns money

As the ongoing recession continues to force local governments to watch every penny, the Spartanburg County Registrations and Elections office is exploring assuming the responsibility – and the expense – for municipal elections.
Registration and Election Director Henry Laye said Monday that a law passed last year now requires every member of municipal election boards to be certified as well as any municipal staff involved with elections. He said to be certified requires seven courses, most of which are conducted in Columbia, and would cost each municipality around $8,000 to have their election commissions and staff certified.
Laye said that in the continuing financial difficulties most local governments face, ceding the responsibility and expense of conducting those elections to the county makes sense for both the cities and towns and their voters.
