The inaugural meeting of the county’s Corrective Action Committee to address lingering problems within several offices brought several officials together last week to begin finding solutions to an ongoing document dilemma.
County councilman Dale Culbreth opened the meeting as chairman and outlined the crux of the problems facing the group, namely that document handling within the Delinquent Tax Office, Register of Deeds and county Records Management offices continues to be hampered by outdated equipment and inadequate staff to scan and organize the hundreds of documents those offices are responsible for.
“Much to my chagrin, we’re here talking about them today,” Culbreth said. “The problems have not been fixed.”
Joined by Auditor Sharon West, Probate Judge Ponda Caldwell and Clerk of Court Hope Blackley, Culbreth and fellow councilmen Roger Nutt and David Britt discussed some of the ideas for addressing the document problem.
West expressed her excitement at having everyone involved sitting around the same table to come up with solutions and said initial efforts in her office have pointed out some solutions. She said that with the addition of two employees to her staff starting July 1, her staff has been able to hit the ground running in terms of getting a better handle on the document logjam.
West said her office has about 25,000 property deeds that need to be updated and that the additional staff will help get that done in a timely manner.
