Congressman Trey Gowdy met with constituents at Wade’s Restaurant on Thursday, August 25 and received both praise and scorn from those in attendance.
The vast majority in attendance were Republicans who sided with Gowdy and applauded nearly all he spoke of.
A scattering of Democrats was present too and they let their feelings be known, much to the consternation of the majority in the room.
The topics discussed were those that have been debated throughout the past Congressional session, how to balance the budget through reduced spending along with cuts to entitlement programs.
One woman repeatedly asked Congressman Gowdy how he would vote on extending the Bush payroll tax cuts.
Gowdy at first said he didn’t know because “how long are you going to extend them? Forever?”
He later explained he favored extending all the Bush tax cuts and didn’t like the “class warfare” the other side is floating when it comes to just extending cuts for one portion of the population.
Gowdy said, “They want to soak the rich,” and added, “I’m not going to raise the 34% margins” of the top earners.”
Speaking of tax cuts, he finally said, “None of it matters unless there are cuts” in spending. “Until we have conversation on the size and scope of government nothing’s going to change.”
While noting he wants a smaller federal government, he said, “You have to have government but government is supposed to work here (in the states) and you shouldn’t have to run to Washington for everything.”
