The Spartanburg County Regional History Museum hosted “A Tribute to Military Vehicles and Armory” on Saturday, Nov. 7.
The opening ceremony began at 11 a.m. in the outdoor plaza of the Chapman Cultural Center with between 250 to 300 people on hand.
The event was a collaboration between the History Museum and many groups including American Legion Post-28 and local military re-enactors.
A large display of military vehicles and armory were available for the public to look over and in some cases speak with the men and women who manned those vehicles while serving our nation.
The equipment, which included jeeps, half-tracks, motorcycles and big guns, spanned warfare from the Civil War through modern times.
The World Armament Research Associates provided more than 20 vehicles and pieces of armory for the event.
The opening ceremony featured General Ed Hall, US Army (Ret.) reading “What is A Veteran,” followed by a gun salute and the playing of Taps.
As the American flag was folded the meaning of each fold was announced to those in attendance.
Patriotic music played throughout the event spanning different periods of time during our nation’s military history.
Spartanburg’s Chris Ebert brought her son Ethan, 8, to the event. They were joined by his friends Sam (also 8) and John Ebert, who is 5..
She said, “I thought it would be a great thing for them to see. Sam loves World War II and Ethan’s great-grandfather was in World War II.”
This was the third and last event in the Spartanburg Historical Association’s salute to veterans, said Spartanburg County Regional History Museum Director Nannie Jeffries.
She stated, “It has proven to be wonderful. The generosity of the re-enactors and vehicle owners and the community at large was wonderful to see.
“We’re really quite pleased and we hope the veterans in our community are pleased with our showing tribute to them.”
The History Museum’s previous events were a musical program featuring songs spanning the time from the Revolutionary War to the present and a book signing featuring local authors who were veterans of military service.
