“Operation Abscond” Nets 62 Probation Parole Offenders

By Jay King
HOMETOWN NEWS

A three-day multi-agency effort to round up probation parole offenders has netted 62 arrests on an attempted 520 warrants from Sunday morning to midday Tuesday, Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said during a press conference at the end of the effort.
Five agencies assisted with the operation, dubbed “Operation Abscond.” Wright said the sheriff’s department, the SC Department of Probation Parole, SLED, Spartanburg Public Safety and the Spartanburg County Detention Facility coordinated their efforts to round up more than 500 people who had violated their probation parole.
“These are people who did not do what they were directed to do by the court system,” Wright said. ‘This was a successful operation in that we held some folks accountable for their actions.”
The sheriff said that the effort also cleared some other crimes through confessions and information provided by some of those arrested, including three larcenies, two burglaries, one bank robbery and four car thefts. He also added one individual confessed to stealing some trailers that hadn’t even been reported stolen yet.
Wright said what was aggravating about the necessity of this operation is a court system that allows so many repeat offenders back on the streets among the general public. He said that while nearly all of the warrants for minor offenses, the public should care about getting these people off the street because of the likelihood many of them will be involved in further crimes.
Probation and Parole agents report a 70 percent success rate in Spartanburg County for the offenders placed under their supervision but that the 30 percent who violate the terms of their parole continue to be a problem for law enforcement.
Wright said that while the intensive effort of “Operation Abscond” is winding down, his department and other agencies will never stop looking for the people with warrants against them.
