Eight Teams Lead District Playoffs

With wet weather and postponed games causing some uncertainty about playoff matchups this week, eight area teams can rest easy in the fact that no matter who they play, the task for the opponent will be a tough one.
Baseball teams from Chesnee, Dorman, Boiling Springs, Spartanburg and Landrum all lead their District playoff brackets, while the softball teams from Broome, Landrum, and Gaffney are in control.
Each team is scheduled to play on Wednesday, weather permitting, and each will have to be beaten twice to be denied the chance to advance to their respective Upper State title brackets.
Who they will play was a little more unsure at press time.
Elimination games were mostly postponed or suspended due to Monday’s wet weather in the area. The games were scheduled to be played on Tuesday, but with more rain in the forecast, that was an uncertain possibility.
Six more local teams had a chance to earn a spot in the District finals. Each has to win an elimination game, then beat a District host twice.
The road will be toughest for the Chapman softball team. Chapman began their elimination game on Monday, falling behind Lugoff-Elgin 8-0 before rain suspended play. The Lady Panthers were to resume their contest on Tuesday afternoon.
Byrnes’ softball team was to face T.L. Hanna for the right to play Gaffney, and Chesnee was on the road against Walhalla, with the winner traveling to Gilbert for the District Final.
In the baseball playoffs, Blacksburg had to win an elimination game for the right to play Chesterfield. Broome was trying to beat Liberty to advance to take on Pageland Central, and a Woodruff win over Batesburg-Leesville would send the Wolverines back to Walhalla.
As for the hosts, Broome will play Batesburg-Leesville or Pendleton, Landrum’s boys will take on Great Falls or Wagener Salley, Chesnee will play Gilbert or Emerald, Boiling Springs will take on Greenwood or Clover, Dorman will play Ridge View, Spartanburg will play Northwestern and Landrum’s girls will see Ridge Spring-Monetta or Chesterfield.
