The Chesnee Eagles used an outstanding performance on the mound by Brandon Henderson and an 11-run outburst at the plate to take control of the 2A baseball championship series Monday night.
Chesnee defeated Hanahan 11-0, and now needs a win at home on Wednesday to clinch the program’s first title since 1988.
A deciding game three, if necessary, would be held Friday at a neutral site.
Chesnee built an early 4-0 lead with a two-out rally in the second inning on RBI hits from Taylor Waldrup and Taylor Wade, and added another score on an infield hit by Stephen Cantrell.
Jordan Garrett and Colby Painter hit singles in the third, advancing on a sacrifice and scoring on a wild pitch and an error.
The Eagles increased their lead to 10-0 after four innings, with Ryan Mitchell’s two-run homer as the big blow, and Waldrup hit a solo homer in the fifth to round out the Eagles’ scoring.
Meanwhile, Henderson was mowing down the Hawks at the plate. He struck out eight of the 15 batters he faced, allowing just two hits. Catcher Ryan Mitchell did his part by erasing those two runners, throwing them out while trying to steal second.
In other playoff action, the Byrnes baseball team put its pursuit of the state 4A title on hold due to rain. The Rebels were to host White Knoll on Tuesday night, and will visit the Timberwolves in the best-of-three series on Thursday. A deciding game three would be Saturday at a neutral site.
The Dorman girls soccer team is also still alive, as their Monday night game with Mauldin was cancelled due to weather. The teams were to play on Tuesday.
