Chesnee’s Zack Miller clears the last hurdle on the way to a victory in the 110 hurdles at the 2A state track meet on Saturday. The victory was the Eagles first-ever state title in a sport other than baseball.

On Friday, Chesnee track and cross-country coach Eric Ludeman announced that he would be stepping down as a coach at the school follwing the state track meet.
On Saturday, his team sent him out a winner.
The Chesnee boys took first place finishes in four events and strong finishes in six others to claim the 2A state track title. It’s the first state championship of any kind for Chesnee since 1988’s state baseball title, and the school’s first-ever non-baseball state crown.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” Ludeman said. “It’s just fantastic.”
Chesnee got wins from Austin High in the 1600 and 3200 meters, from Zack Miller in the 110 meter hurdles, and from Josh Jones in the long jump. Those wins were not a surprise. What impressed Ludeman was the way his other athletes performed.
“We kind of knew we were in pretty good standing, but I thought second place was a more realistic goal,” the coach said. “But we underperformed at Upper State, and it’s a funny thing: teams that don’t do as well as they should tend to do much better the next week at state.”
That held true for Chesnee, as every Eagle who qualified for the state meet finished at his seeded spot or better.
“Every single one of them did as well as or better than they were expected to do,” Ludeman said. “The wins were fantastic, but I think one of the keys was Tyshun Mitchell. He was seeded 7th in the discus, and he went out and added 10 feet to his season best, set a school record, and finished third. You have to have performances like that to win.”
Ludeman said everyone on the team contributed.
“It was truly a team win,” Ludeman said. “Every single one of them provided crucial points.”
Other team members include Ethan Hughey, Justin Blackwell, Nick Blankenship and Raheem Hughes.
Chesnee outpointed second-place Hanahan 62-57. Bishop England was third with 47 points.
In the afternoon 1A/2A meet, both the Landrum boys and girls used strong performances by their distance runners to take second place overall finishes. Both Cardinal 4×800 relay teams came through with wins as well.
