One of the Upper State’s premiere 1A baseball teams has a new leader.
Landrum High School named Dennis Brown head coach on Monday, ending a search that began at the end of the 1A playoffs. Don Landrum had held the job on an interim basis last season.
“As everybody knows, baseball is #1 in Landrum,” Athletic Director John Cann said. “It’s very important to the community and very important to the school. I think our track record proves a great tradition, so we knew that this was a very important hire for our program.”
Cann said Brown’s experience and reputation made a difference.
“He’s very well-respected in District One,” Cann said. “We feel like he’s a guy that emerged that knows our community, that will work well with our parents, and we’re confident in the fact that he knows the game of baseball. We’re looking for him to come in and do a great job.”
Cann said the position came with high expectations.
“He knows that we expect to contend for state championships,” Cann said. “I know he’s all about working hard and getting back to that point.
Brown, who helped start the softball program at Chapman and most recently was the coach of Campobello-Gramling’s junior high program, said he welcomed the challenge of taking the helm at Landrum.
“I think the easiest way to handle the high expectations is to let them know that I have those same expectations,” Brown said. “I’ve been in Spartanburg County all my life. I’ve been in District One a long time. I know what Landrum baseball is all about. I played Legion Ball with some of the parents here. I’ve been around it a long time.”
Brown said the post was the realization of a goal.
“Coaching high school baseball was something that I always wanted to get into,” he said. “ I know exactly what they’re looking for. That’s one reason I always thought it would be good to coach baseball here. They’re a small community, but they’re high on their baseball. That’s why I’m here.”
Brown said that even though the bar of success had been set high at Landrum, his team would concentrate on first winning region titles.
“I think you have to,” he said. “If you look too far ahead, you’ll fall over that first stumbling block. But at the same time, I’m not going to be afraid to throw that word - state championship - out there from the get go. That’s what we’re going to work for.”
