    This Week's Poll
Centurions, Panthers Headed for Showdown in Region II-2A Softball Race

With Spring Break over and region seasons winding down, region champions and playoff scenarios will become a little clearer in the next two weeks.

Sports 4-10.jpg: Teams fighting for playoff position will try to shore up their standing, while teams at the top of the regions will battle for crowns and top playoff seeds. One battle will take place Thursday night, as Broome and Chapman will square off for the lead in Region II-2A. Broome has defeated Chapman once already in region play, a 2-0 pitching masterpiece by Broome hurler Shelby Spencer. Spencer did not allow a hit until the seventh inning in the first contest against the Lady Panthers, and has not allowed an earned run to a region team this year. Chapman, meanwhile, has improved steadily since the loss to Broome, and looks to even the season series and perhaps force a playoff for the Lady Panthers’ fourth straight region title. “I think we’re better than when we played them the first time,” said Chapman head coach rebecca Pack. “I think it’s going to be a great game. We both have good pitching, good hitting, and solid defense. It could come down to just one or two little things during the game that go one way or the other.” Chesnee can also have a say in the region championship race, but only as a spoiler. The Lady Eagles have two region losses, with one to Broome and one to Chapman, but they have both teams left to play. Pack points to Chapman’s recent victory over Chesnee as a positive for her team. “That game helped us,” she said. “We were able to get our bats going a little bit against a very good pitcher. We got some good hits, and that helps with our confidence.” Chapman is no stranger to its current situation. During the state championship season ni 2005, the Lady Panthers were forced into a one-game playoff with Broome for the region crown, lost in the first round of double-elimination playoff only to battle back and win, and fell behind 1-0 in the best-of-three championship series. Several of the current players were on that team, something that Pack sees as a positive. “I think the experience helps,” she said. “We know that we have the ability and talent to play well, and the experience helps us put the loss behind us, and recognize that one loss is not the end of our season at this point.” Game time is 7 p.m. Thursday at Chapman.
