A Lyman resident has raised questions about the financial dealings of mayoral candidate Dennis Lindey following an examination into the backgrounds of all three candidates.
Charles Miller, who is also running for a seat on the Lyman Town Council, approached Hometown News with documents late last week that describe a variety of financial difficulties Lindey is facing. Miller told the paper that he couldn't let go unchallenged the statement Lindey made in an earlier interview in which he described himself as a successful businessman.
Miller came to the monthly town council meeting Monday night with the intention of asking Lindey about the information in the documents, but Lindey declined to comment and drove away with a fellow councilman.
"I came here trying to address some issues that came to my attention," Miller said after the meeting, while waiting on Lindey and other council members to emerge from an executive session. "My question is this, "how could he run a $3-4 million a year budget when he can't even control his own finances."
Miller said that he had nothing against Lindey but wanted to know how the apparent financial difficulties described in court documents would affect Lindey's abilities to make good financial decisions for the town, especially in a municipality operating under the "strong mayor" form of government.
"I just wanted to see what explanation he could give," Miller said.
He added that one property belonging to Lindey at 66 Groce Rd. had been foreclosed on that very morning through the Master of Equity in the Court of Common Pleas.
"I mean, these papers speak for themselves," Miller said, waving the documents he had obtained from Spartanburg County deeds and records and the 7th Circuit Solicitor's Office.
Hometown News contacted Lindey by phone Monday night but he did not wish to discuss the issue at that time. He did say that an explanation and rebuttal would be forthcoming at a later date.
