Cherokee Co. casts majority for Newt

BY JANET S. SPENCER
HOMETOWN NEWS
Cherokee County residents cast 42 percent of their votes for former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich in Saturday’s 2012 GOP Presidential Preference Primary, following a statewide trend.
Cherokee County Republican Party Chairman Steven Blanton said, “I was very pleased with voter turnout for a rainy Saturday.  I’m grateful for everyone who gave a little time and effort to get out and help choose the nominee for the party.  I’m also thankful to each poll worker and election commissioner who worked all day to make this all possible.”
As the top four candidates moved on to campaigning in Florida, local residents were quick to point out that since 1980, Cherokee County has predicted the Republican party’s nominee in the bid to become the next President of the United States.
Rounding out the votes cast in the county were 21 percent for Rick Santorum; 19 percent for Mitt Romney; 16 percent for Ron Paul.  Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, John Huntsman, Gary Johnson and Rick Perry each received less than one percent.
Blanton projected that Newt Gingrich’s forceful TV interview leading to the primary preference voting played strongly in the outcome, as well as his ex-wife’s public interviews regarding their previous marriage.
