Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller said an investigation into what caused a fire that destroyed the boarding house on Cherokee Avenue on March 9 was continuing.

“We’ve interviewed multiple persons of interest. We’ve also brought several persons of interest in and administered polygraph tests. We’re currently doing more interviews and have to run down other people who were living there to talk to them. This investigation is ongoing,” Mueller said on Tuesday.
Two deputies, 4-year veteran Nick Federico and Benji Peterson who joined the force a year ago, were credited with breaking a window and pulling a disabled man to safety.

The deputies were called to the 1301 Cherokee Avenue address after the fire was reported at 5:45 a.m.
Mueller said they arrived to find the structure fully engulfed in flames and a large group of residents were gathered outside, screaming that someone was still in the house.
