Members of the Blacksburg Town Council - from left to right - Joe Ross, Mayor David Hogue, Mike Patterson, and Darren Janesky, unanimously passed the town’s 2011 budget on Tuesday night. Councilwoman Janie Wilson did not attend the meeting.

Members of the Blacksburg Town Council passed the town’s 2011 budget on Tuesday, just a day before the last day of the 2010 fiscal year.
At a tad over $2.9 million, the budget comes in more than $1.2 million less than last year’s. With the whopping decrease in expenditures, also comes a 5 percent pay increase for the town’s employees, who haven’t received a raise in three years.
The good news continues when it comes to the town’s millage rate. The budget includes a slight drop, from 153.50 mills to 148.82 mills, which will save Blacksburg residents a little bit on assessed property.
Passing the budget was an extremely proud moment for Mayor David Hogue.
“Everybody’s done a good job on this,” he said enthusiastically. “I’m proud to say I’m from Blacksburg.”
