By Megan Anderson
HOMETOWN NEWS

Members of the Blacksburg Business Association are hoping many people from throughout this area will join them this weekend for some traditional down-home fun. By attending Saturday’s fourth annual Iron City Festival you can help support an event that honors Blacksburg by “respecting the past” while “moving toward the future”.
The Town of Blacksburg will kick off the celebration with a street dance on Friday night. Sammy O’Banion & the Mardi Gras will provide entertainment from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The beach music group was well received when they played in Gaffney last spring as part of the Shindig at the Cabin concert series. The band is comprised of Sammy O’Banion (main vocalist), Holly Artis (vocalist), Dale Pridgen (guitarist), Linda Little (vocalist), Horace Stallings (keyboard), Anthony Ellis (drummer), and Mitch Miller (bass guitar).
Saturday’s long list of events is sponsored by the Blacksburg Business Association. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be a variety of entertainment options to check out include a car show, health fair, and several live bands.
To start things off, there will be a kid’s parade at 10 a.m. Children of all ages are invited to participate by riding skateboards, bicycles, wagons and other items not powered by engines. To participate, meet in the front part of the parking lot at American Community Bank.
Youngsters will also enjoy storytelling by Susan Fulton from the Blacksburg Public Library, performances by Barbara Emery-Willard as “Pickles” Da Clown, hayrides from Carnes Family Hayrides, and the chance to ride on “The Little Blue Choo” trackless train.
Train enthusiasts will also appreciate the SC Railroad Museum and Atlantic Coast S. Gaugers miniature train display. The interactive display features a 1/64-scale world of model trains manufactured from the 1950’s to the present. The display is co-sponsored by First Baptist Church and will be located in the church’s Family Life Center.
For those who like to compete, there will be a cake contest and a car show. A $50 cash prize will be awarded to the best cake. Entries must be submitted to the Community House by 10 a.m. for judging at 11 a.m. The cakes will then be given away at a cakewalk. Car enthusiasts can compete for bragging rights by entering their cars, trucks and motorcycle in the Koss MotorSports car show. Registration is $25 and will take place on N. Shelby Street. For more information, call Steve Koss at (803) 320-3193 or visit www.kossmotorsports.com.
In terms of entertainment, J. B. Philbeck will be on-hand as Elvis impersonator and several live bands will be performing throughout the day.
Other musical acts including 16th Avenue, Barn Burners, South by South, Carolina Thunder, Iron City Band, Because of Grace, and Paul Black cover all the music genres, including country, rock ‘n roll, beach, blue grass, gospel, inspirational Christian, folk, and contemporary.
“Come to this year’s Iron City Festival for family fun, entertainment, and good food,” said BBA President George Kirby. “It’s a great event and your whole family will enjoy it.”
