McAbee is top S.C. trooper for 2010

BY JANET S. SPENCER
HOMETOWN NEWS
A former Blacksburg police officer who later worked as a Cherokee County sheriff’s deputy before joining the Highway Patrol has been named South Carolina’s 2010 Trooper of the Year.
Lt. Cpl. Dean McAbee of Gaffney was selected from 10 nominees and is the first named from Cherokee County for the statewide honor, according to Highway Patrol records dating back to 1968, said Sherri Iacobelli with the patrol’s office of public relations.
McAbee became a trooper in 2002. His first assignment was in Spartanburg County, and he transferred to Cherokee County in January 2004. He had previously worked with the Blacksburg Police Department from 1995-1998 and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office from 1998-2002.
McAbee was honored last week in Columbia when he attended the patrol’s annual awards ceremony, expecting to be recognized only as the winner from his division.

For the rest of the story, read this week’s Blacksburg Times.
