Rep. Steve Moss took the oath of office for the House District 30 seat on Monday night in front of a crowd of family and friends, The Blacksburg banker was sworn in at a gathering in Iron City Place, becoming the first Republican to ever assume the seat.
Several local politicians were on hand to witness the historic occasion, including state Sen. Harvey Peeler, State Rep. Dennis Moss (District 29), Cherokee County Councilman Rufus Foster, Gaffney Council members Boone Peeler and Bernard Smith, and Blacksburg Town Council members Darren Janesky and Janie Wilson.
Dr. Bobby Moss, a local historian, also attended the event and verified Moss as only the second Blacksburg resident to be elected to the position.
Blacksburg Mayor David Hogue administered the oath, saying that of all the swearing-in ceremonies he’s participated in during his seven terms in office, this was the most special.
“I don’t think I’ve had the energy, enthusiasm, and excitement that I’ve had for this election,” he said. “I felt that in the town.”
Moss used the opportunity to thank his supporters before heading to Columbia.
“I appreciate all the support I’ve had,” he said to a cheering crowd. “I’ve been blessed this whole campaign. I look forward to going down there and representing you and representing your Republican values.”
Those in attendance, like Beth McCall, seemed to be looking forward to that representation, as well.
“I know that Steve Moss will stand up for the values my family and I believe in,” she said. “We can count on his integrity in difficult situations.”
