Crash shuts down part of I-85

Northbound lane re-opened to traffic Tuesday

BY JANET S. SPENCER
HOMETOWN NEWS
Northbound I-85 re-opened to traffic on Tuesday morning after the fatal crash of an 18-wheeler into a concrete support column two days earlier at the Highway 150 overpass near Gaffney.
Two occupants of the truck died in the resulting inferno and damage that forced S.C. Department of Transportation crews to demolish the bridge spanning the two northbound lanes and re-route traffic at Gaffney’s often busy Highway 11 overpass.
The section of the Highway 150 bridge across the southbound side of I-85 has remained intact and traffic in that direction continued to flow.
The northbound detour was designed to take vehicles off the interstate at Exit 92 and across the Floyd Baker Boulevard bridge with a right turn back onto the Frontage Road on the opposite side of I-85, but many drivers veered off the path, snarling traffic throughout the city.
Blacksburg was not unaffected.
Traffic was impacted when many of the 18-wheelers chose alternate routes from Gaffney to get to Highway 29, the Iron City’s main street, to continue their northward journey.
