HOMETOWN NEWS
Blacksburg High School Principal Jim Touchberry who has been a working retiree will not return to his position for the new school year, although he interviewed for the job.
Touchberry fell victim of recent haggling by Cherokee County School Board members and the administration on whether to continue employment of retired personnel.
Under the state’s Teacher and Employee Retention Program or TERI, retired personnel have been granted contracts by the district to continue working at reduced salaries.
Touchberry was among them.
Arguments for and against the use of retired personnel and whether the district realizes a savings in salaries paid on a reduced scale instead of length of service have been raised.
