The 10 fun-filled days of the 32nd South Carolina Peach Festival came to a close on Sunday with a final worship service at Gaffney’s downtown cabin.
Hundreds of people turned out for the festival’s various events, but some probably enjoyed themselves more than others, as they walked away as winners.
At the festival’s first competition, the Dessert Contest, Tricia Pedersen took first place and won $250 with her entry, “Peach Pecan Delight”. Second-place finisher Hope Gault received $100 for “Just Peachy Upside Down Cake”, while Tracy Will earned $50 by finishing in third place with a creation called “Topsy-Turvy Bread Pudding”.
At the Blacksburg Rotary-sponsored New Talent Night, Taylor Miller and Pierre Salmon stole the show with their musical performances.
Miller, a 12-year-old from Chesnee, earned a first-place finish in the under - 15 category, and earned herself $100 for her rendition of the country song, “Why Haven’t I Heard From You”.
Salmon, the Director of the Cherokee County-Union Chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, took the top spot in the 15 - and - over group after receiving a standing ovation for his a cappella version of the song “Blessed Assurance”. He also received $100.
Finishing in second place were Zoe Hurst and Markus Upton. They each received $50 for their efforts.
Hurst, a 7-year-old from Gaffney, performed “Amazing Grace” as a competitor in the under - 15 group, while Spartanburg resident Upton sang “In the Still of the Night” in the 15 - and - over category.
A new peach festival event this year was a skateboard competition at Gaffney’s Irene Park Complex. Dylan Fipps and Devin Payne won the inaugural competition. Fipps finished at the top of the beginner category, followed by competitors Creighton Wood, Cole Cash, and finally Jay Cash. In the advanced category, Payne topped fellow skaters Christian Wood and Josh Wicks, who finished in second and third-places, respectively.
Several teams turned out to compete in the festival’s first-ever Bar-B-Q Cook-off, a Kansas City Barbeque Society-sanction event, but only one team, Butts and Breasts, came out on top. While various awards, such as best chicken or pork, were presented, the Landrum-based team earned bragging rights by being named the over-all winner.
