Investigation into shooting of pet continues

Owner questions circumstances surrounding deputy’s actions

BY JANET S. SPENCER
HOMETOWN NEWS
Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller said an internal investigation into a deputy firing his service weapon and injuring a dog outside a Blacksburg residence on July 14 was continuing this week.
The deputy went to Roberts Road to serve a civil paper, and the dog lunged at the officer who was pushed backward.
“He fired his department-issued pistol as he fell to the ground,” Mueller explained.
Brandy Carver, owner of Cinnamon, her family’s pet that already had a lame leg after being hit by a car several years ago, said the Labrador retriever was a tail-wagging lovable pet and not a threat to anyone.
She’s not content to accept what happened to cause Cinnamon’s injury.
“If I don’t stand up for him, and this is wrong, what can happen to other pets in the future or how many has it happened to before,” Carver asked, regarding her quest to obtain answers to questions about what happened.

For the rest of the story, read this week’s Blacksburg Times.

Family members say Cinnamon, shot by a Cherokee County sheriff’s deputy on July 14, is recovering.
