Town workers have reduced workweek

BY JANET S. SPENCER
HOMETOWN NEWS
Town of Blacksburg full-time workers have gone to a 32-hour week to help make up a deficit in the current annual budget.
Officials have said about $150,000 is needed to balance the budget caused by a change in the rate of collectable taxes added to expenses incurred by the gas department that no longer generates revenue after the town’s recent sale to the York County Gas Authority.
The Council agreed in its meeting on Aug. 9 on another cost-cutting measure.
Only one of two police officers who recently resigned will be replaced. The officers are Brandon Townsend and Shane Childers.
Both moves are expected to cut the deficit to about $40,000.
The town’s annual financial audit recently revealed personnel to be the largest expense.
Mayor David Hogue recommended the action for each savings proposal, saying he and Administrator Trudy Martin had been working on a way to cut the deficit since the budget was approved when the new fiscal year began April 1.
