American Legion Post 109 with two players from Blacksburg may not have brought home the trophy when they represented South Carolina in the 2011 World Series in Shelby.
But the 18-member squad earned a spot by previously taking the regional title and earning state honors before finishing fifth in the nation.
The trip, however, even without the World Series title, was awesome, according to Post 109 Athletic Director Jerry “Jug” Wallace.
The games also drew record-breaking crowds.
Volunteers sold the ticket that shattered attendance records shortly before Post 109 took on Eden Prairie, Minn.
Ticket number 60,001 broke the attendance high that stretched back 73 years. Not since 1938 in Spartanburg have the games been so well attended, said American Legion officials who sold the golden ticket to Will Coggins of Gaffney.
