Officers face unrelated charges

Both accused of sexual misconduct

BY JANET S. SPENCER
HOMETOWN NEWS
Two unrelated arrests in the last month charge a former Cherokee County sheriff’s deputy and a detention officer who was on payroll with degrees of alleged sexual misconduct.
The most recent charge on Oct. 4 was described as work-connected while the older arrest in August was not, investigators said.
Last week, an agent with the State Law Enforcement Division, arrested Blacksburg businessman Albert Bradley Phillips, 41, of 187 Planters Drive, Gaffney, on a charge of misconduct in office.
The warrant issued by SLED accuses Al Phillips of committing “official misconduct by engaging in a sexual act with a confidential informant who has a pending charge in Cherokee County.”
The warrant also stated Al Phillips was working as a narcotics officer in the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office while dealing with the informant.
Al Phillips, who also served briefly as assistant chief of the Blacksburg Police Department in 2006, currently owns, operates and is a personal trainer at Total Definitions Fitness Center, 301 W. Cherokee St., Blacksburg. The business opened in 2007.
He was hired by the Blacksburg Police Department in 1999 and worked with the former Metro Narcotics Unit made up of officers from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Blacksburg and Gaffney police departments.
