Rain postpones October charity events but ends County’s drought

By Megan Anderson
HOMETOWN NEWS

Recent rains in Cherokee County have been both a blessing and a curse.
On the plus side, the amount of precipitation has improved the county’s drought status. Several counties have been suffering from what is considered an “incipient” drought, the least severe of the South Carolina State Climatology Office’s categories of droughts, since Sept 2.
Nine counties across the state - York, Chester, Fairfield, Lancaster, Kershaw, Chesterfield, Marlboro, Dillon, and Darlington – continue to experience drought conditions, but the state’s Drought Response Committee declared Cherokee and 11 other counties drought-free on their most recent meeting on Oct. 16. Greenville, Spartanburg, Union, Laurens, Newberry, Anderson, Abbeville, Greenwood, McCormick, Edgefield and Saluda were also reclassified as “normal”.
The downpours, though, have caused quite a concern for local Cherokee County charities trying to hold outdoor fundraising events.
The Cherokee Historical and Preservation Society has been particularly affected by the weather recently.
The 2009 Fall Classic Car Show has been postponed four times over the past several weeks, but the group is determined to overcome Mother Nature eventually. The eighth annual display of antique and collectible cars, trucks, and motorcycles is now scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event promises a lot of food and fun, and there will be a variety of trophies and door prizes.
If weather is again a concern that weekend, please call the History and Art Museum that morning at (864) 489-3988 for the status of the event.
Rain also forced the Senior Centers of Cherokee County to put the brakes on their 1st Annual Motorcycle Run event. The “Run for Seniors” was scheduled for Oct. 17, but has now been pushed back to Saturday, Oct. 31.
Riders will begin at the Gaffney Senior Center, travel to the Blacksburg Senior Center, and then ride a route through Cherokee County. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m., with the first bike out at 10 a.m. and the last bike out at 12 p.m. Registration fees are tax deductible and include a hot dog lunch provided by Logan Street Hog Dogs.
