A Cherokee County sheriff’s deputy who also trained fellow officers has been arrested on a charge of criminal domestic violence, high and aggravated, and fired from the job.
Sheriff Steve Mueller said about 7:30 on Sunday morning the Gaffney City Police Department was dispatched to the home of Christopher Paul Wyatt, regarding a complaint of criminal domestic violence that involved the deputy’s wife.
Lt. Christopher Paul Wyatt was arrested about 8:30 a.m. and booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center about an hour later, records show.
He was released from jail on a $10,000 bond.
Wyatt was hired at the Cherokee County Detention Center on July 1, 2002, and moved to deputy status in November 2003. He graduated from the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy on January 23, 2004, and over the past couple of years had served as the Sheriff’s Office Training Coordinator.
“His service record was exemplary and his arrest comes as a shock to his peers and this administration. However, due to the nature of the charges and his role as a public servant who is sworn to protect and serve, he has been terminated from employment with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office as of 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 23, 2011,” Mueller said.
Mueller expressed appreciation to Gaffney Police Chief Rick Turner and the city officers for their professionalism and diligence in conducting a proper investigation.
According to a police report filed by city officers, Amy Strain Wyatt’s mother reported the assault on her daughter.
