The residents of Cherokee County are honoring the county’s nearly 5,000 veterans in a number of ways, beginning this weekend.
The Cherokee County Veterans Day Organization will be hosting the 9th Annual Veteran’s Day Parade in downtown Gaffney on Saturday. The parade starts at 10 a.m. and will proceed from Thomson Park to Railroad Avenue.
The Rolling Thunder patriot riders and members of the National Guard will be on hand to put people in a patriotic mood.
Businesses and individuals are welcome to participate in the parade, as well, as long as they display an American flag on their vehicle.
After the parade, beginning at 11 a.m., there will be a special program at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, which is located at Logan and Granard streets.
Students in Blacksburg will be celebrating the holiday on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
All four schools will come together on Tuesday for a community-wide Veteran’s Day Celebration called “4 Schools: 1 Salute to Veterans”. The event will take place in the Blacksburg High School Stadium at 9 a.m.
Former service members will have the opportunity to participate in a Parade of Veterans. There will be golf carts available for those who are unable to walk.
Part of the program will be dedicated to the memory of Lance Cpl. Chris Fowlkes, Cherokee County’s first serviceman to die in combat since the Vietnam War. The Gaffney Marine died in September from injuries he sustained while stationed in Afghanistan.
The program will conclude with a reception in the school’s Media Center, featuring student representatives from each school.
In the event of rain, the event will be held on Thursday, Nov. 12.
Students at Blacksburg Elementary School and Blacksburg Middle School will also host their own events to honor area veterans.
BES will have a program and reception, beginning at 9 a.m.
At BMS, veterans will have lunch in the cafeteria from 11 a.m. to 12:30, then participate in programs in the High School’s auditorium at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.
