HOMETOWN NEWS
Just call Newt Gingrich the “Comeback Kid II.”
With his resounding win here Gingrich hopes to wear that moniker just as Democrat Bill Clinton did in 1992 and ride it all the way to the White House in January 2013.
Gingrich, who just a little over a week before Saturday’s election, was trailing frontrunner Mitt Romney by double digits ended up instead by winning South Carolina by double digits.
Gingrich’s strong debate performances leading up to the primary vote as well as Romney’s stumbles, including oft repeated television airings of him saying, “I like firing people,” “I didn’t make that much money (from speaking engagements) only $374,000, ha, ha, ha,” as well as not being forthcoming on releasing his tax returns, having money in Cayman Islands accounts and still not clearly articulating why his work at Bain Capital should be a plus not a minus for a Republican candidate, all led to Gingrich winning going away.
With 99.39 percent of South Carolina precincts reporting Saturday night, Gingrich received 40.45 percent of the vote to Romney’s 27.83 percent. Rick Santorum got 16.98 percent of the vote while Ron Paul came away with just 12.97 percent.
