Fourth of July is Most Significant Holiday in our Nation’s History

By  David Stephens
Hometown News

Raising Old Glory
Ron Taylor played Call to Colors and Jana Curry sang the National Anthem as members of the DAV and American Legion raised the United States Flag at the Grapevine Restaurant in Boiling Springs.

Of the ten declared federal holidays,  none would seem to have as much significance to the history of the United States as does the Fourth of July. That day marks the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In 1774 the 13 colonies had first sent delegates to Philadelphia to form the First Continental Congress and while the delegates were unhappy with England,  they were not yet ready to declare war for their independence. Actual hostilities began in April of 1775 when British troops advanced on Concord, Massachusetts and the “shot heard round the world” was fired.

For the rest of the story, see this week’s Boiling Springs Sentry.
