On the evening of Sept. 13 District Two School Board of Trustees Chairperson Connie Smith convened the board in monthly session with Superintendent Dr. Scott Mercer and all trustees in attendance except Jack O’Bryant.
After approval of the agenda and an addendum and the August minutes the floor was opened up to public comments.
One District Two parent expressed her concern that at her children’s school there had been no mention of or observance of the events of 9/11 and the effects they had on the country. The parent stated that she believed this was a significant event and children of all ages needed to be educated about it.
Another parent voiced concern about the “lack of diversity” among the teaching staff at Oakland Elementary and said she believes it should be more diverse. The school board and Dr. Mercer took both issues under advisement.
In the instructional services report Assistant Superintendent Dr. Quincie Moore provided copies of a brochure listing professional development courses that are available to District Two teachers.
