HOMETOWN NEWS
Chesnee seniors Colby Painter and Jordan Garrett were team leaders throughout the year and they did their utmost to get the Eagles back to the Region 2-IIA state championship game this year.
To do so they would have to get past a Broome team that had their number in the regular season, taking all three contests.
The Eagles traveled to Broome for a playoff battle on Wednesday, May 4 needing to take two games from a team they hadn’t beaten to advance.
Painter and Garrett took it upon themselves to accomplish a difficult task and put the team on their backs as they took the first game 5-4.
Garrett pitched a complete game and blasted two two-run homeruns; the second knotted the game at four.
Painter launched a no doubt homerun deep into the trees beyond the right field fence to lead off the seventh and give the Eagles a 5-4 lead.
Painter said, “It looked like it was going foul. I was praying the wind would blow it back in.” He added, “I was just trying to make contact, I knew Garrett was on a hot streak and I just wanted to get on base.”
