HOMETOWN NEWS
Forty minutes after the Chesnee Eagles had won the 2A Upper State baseball title, family, fans, and friends still lingered at Dean Jones Baseball Stadium mingling with the coaches and players, showing their appreciation for a job well done. Chesnee last brought a state baseball championship to the town in 1988 and the fans are excited about the prospect of that drought ending this year.
Some of those fans expressed their feelings about the team. Former Chesnee athlete and long - time athletic supporter Terry Ledford said, “This is the best thing that could happen. We have a great team and we stand behind them.” Chesnee athletic director Billy Parris said, “This is a tremendous thing for Chesnee. With the earlier health problems Coach Jones had, it is great to see them out here for him and this team.” Andrew Kincannon, who videos all the baseball games for broadcast by Chesnee Communications said, “This win means everything. With the economy the way it is it gives the town something to rally around and hopefully, things around town will pick up.” Police Chief Scott Smith said, “The town is very proud of these young men. They are pillars of the community and the fans support them one hundred percent.”
Sophomore student Danielle Spalding felt pride in the team as well and said, “This makes us look good. This shows what a team from a small high school and a small town can do.”
Through all those years Coach Dean Jones has been there and he knows well what the fans mean. He said, “These fans are great. They stay behind us and the team knows and appreciates that.”
The Chesnee Eagles will next face Bishop England in a best of three series for the state title. A safe assumption would be that whatever the outcome, the Chesnee fans will be standing, applauding, and cheering for their team.
