HOMETOWN NEWS
It was an extra special Armed Forces Day Celebration at Veteran’s Pointe in Duncan Park on Saturday as the Upstate Amputee Support Group held its inaugural Armed Forces Day Amputee Recognition Day on Saturday, May 21.
It was an even more special day for the guest of honor, Boiling Springs resident Odell W. Vaughan.
Vaughan was unaware he would be recognized and was “honored and humbled” by the experience.
“I’m not used to being treated this way,” he said with a chuckle.
Vaughan is a double amputee who lost his legs on July 20, 1944 while fighting in World War II.
A man in his unit went down under fire and Vaughan and a medic headed out into the bombardment to bring him back.
While scrambling amidst the bombing Vaughan stepped on a landmine.
He lay there for hours, tying off one mangled leg with his belt.
