Well over 1,000 people turned out for the Spartanburg Regional Gibbs Cancer Center’s “Puttin’ on the Ritz” 1920’s themed Cancer Survivors Day celebration at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium on Sunday, June 5.
This was the 14th year the Cancer Center has held “a floor type show,” said event coordinator and Spartanburg Regional oncology nurse Lori Anne Morrow. She noted Regional has been celebrating Cancer Survivor Day for the past 15 or 16 years.
Survivors and their families were treated to barbeque ribs, cole slaw, chips, soft drinks and pineapple upside down cake served by Spartanburg Regional personnel and fellow cancer survivors.
Morrow said, “It’s absolutely wonderful to see the survivors coming back year after year.”
She noted for the first event 14 years ago “we only used half this arena. Now I have to use the whole arena and a little bit of the upstairs.”
That points to the advances made in the fight against, and the survivability of, cancer.
