After spending two weeks delving into the option of self-funding employee health insurance coverage, Spartanburg County Council approved second reading on its 2011-2012 budget and restored about $300,000 in funding to outside agencies while shaving $2 million from the parks department budget.
The move took place at a budget workshop last Wednesday as the council evaluated information from the administration about self-funding options. That measure appears ready for final approval with the last reading of the budget at next week’s regularly scheduled council meeting June 20.
The surprise move came when councilman David Britt proposed stripping the Delinquent Tax office of $300,000 to restore funding to outside agencies. Those agencies like Big Brothers/ Big Sisters, Safe Home Rape Crisis, the Spartanburg Children’s Shelter and the Children’s Advocacy Center, among others, had seen their share of money from the county cut in half under the administration’s initial budget plan.
Britt said that a review of the Delinquent Tax office showed that they had yet to implement some updates and procedures the county council had previously demanded. He said the office was not implementing a program for which the $300,000 was intended so he’d rather move it to agencies that would make good use of the money.
