Chesnee native and long - time District Two educator Deana Watson has been selected to be the new principal at Chesnee Elementary School following the retirement of Dr. Robert Ledford.
Deana Watson has a Bachelor of Arts degree in childhood education and elementary education from the University of South Carolina and has earned a Masters Degree in educational leadership and supervision from Converse College. Watson began her career in District Two in 1990 as a teacher’s assistant and then spent 9 years teaching at Chesnee Elementary School. For the last 10 years Deana Watson was the assistant principal at the school.
The story of how Deana Watson decided on education as a career is a touching one. Watson said, “I was going to the business school at USC Upstate and an education career was not on my mind. Then, while going to school at night, I began the job as a teacher’s assistant. While doing that I met one little boy who changed my outlook. His name was Jimmy and he was underprivileged, from a bad situation, and always in trouble. That little boy so touched me that I decided to teach and do what I could to break that cycle that kids get in like little Jimmy.”
