Swofford Career Center director sees a bright future

By David Stephens
Hometown News

The Swofford Career Center, located at 5260 Highway 11, is a joint venture between School Districts 1 and 2 and serves the high schools of Boiling Springs, Chesnee, Chapman, and Landrum. Swofford Career Center opened for its first year in the 1971-72 school terms and offered ten courses, six of which are still taught at the school along with, now, a wide array of other courses teaching vocational skills.
Swofford now has an average yearly enrollment of 700 students for vocational training and is “bursting at the seams”, but an expansion project is currently underway to add a culinary course, add more space for auto mechanics, and also will add a new lab for graphic design and printing.
Scott Simpkins takes over as the new director this year after serving for 14 years as assistant director. Simpkins has a background in building construction technology and drafting. He spent 11 years teaching at Clover High School before he heard through an acquaintance about a position at Swofford Career Center.  He has been serving there ever since.

For the rest of the story, read this week’s Chesnee Tribune.
