City Councilman objects to City Beautification Project

By David Stephens
Hometown News

On August 8 Chesnee Mayor Max Cash convened council in regular monthly session with all council members present.
Preceding the regular meeting Bob Britts from the Rural Development Community Assistance Program presented to council a clean water/waste water presentation.
After convening and approval of the July meeting minutes, City Administrator Becki Hood gave her report. Hood stated, “Revenues for July were up slightly as some late tax money was received. Expenses for the month were down a little also.”
Hood also requested that council approve three volunteers who will serve as election commissioners after receiving state training and certification.
Hood next reported, “On the Streetscape beautification project we now have a new diagram and blueprint for the lighting scheme and hope to start the bid process soon.”
Hood also reported that the Manning Street sidewalk project was “complete except for the areas around the railroad crossing and negotiations are underway with CSX to get that moving again.”
After Hood’s report, City Councilman Doug Pye objected to the Streetscape Beautification project by saying, “This is just made up of new sidewalks and lights and I do not see spending one - half million dollars for that.”
