Experienced Outreach veteran is newest UFRC VISTA volunteer

By David Stephens
Hometown News

Spartanburg resident Sonya Gray is the latest volunteer to join the staff at the Upstate Family Resource Center. Gray is a graduate of Converse College with a degree in early childhood development and is doing postgraduate work there to obtain a degree in psychology. Gray also is planning in the future to pursue a Master’s and Doctorate in counseling and she is a recent graduate of the Spartanburg County Foundation Grassroots Leadership Institute.
Sonya Gray said, “Through a friend I heard about this VISTA opportunity at UFRC. I have 22 years experience in community outreach programs and after I interviewed with the Executive Director, Kelley Ezell, I knew it would be a good fit for me here.”
Some of Gray’s duties at the Resource Center include recruitment and supervision of volunteers and ensuring they are matched up with existing volunteer opportunities and continuing the financial literacy project at the Center.
“The thing I enjoy most is being able to deal with people at all levels like age, gender, social status, and ethnicity,” Gray said. “ I also have to say that upon arriving here at the Center I was a little overwhelmed by the volume of need in the community. That is some of the frustrating part as well when I am not able to help someone because sometimes the resources just do not exist or are not available.
