It looked like a typical Saturday morning at the Head & Shoulders Knees & Toes salon, located at the corner of Reidville Rd. and Anderson Mill Rd. behind the Rite Aid in West Oak Plaza.
All the stylists’ chairs were filled and they were busy cutting hair. Waiting customers were found lounging in the chairs reading magazines waiting their turns.
If you looked closely though you could see something was different. Most days the shorn hair is discarded on the floor and swept away. Today, most customers’ hair was secured in a rubber band, pulled together like a ponytail and snipped off and dropped into a collection basket.
This was all a part of a “cut-athon” for Locks of Love at the salon. The event was the result of a talk between Woodruff High School English teacher and Cheerleading Coach Heather Westmoreland and her stylist Ashley Caton.
As Westmoreland recounted, she and her cheerleaders were looking for a good community service project and were wracking their brains trying to come up with an idea.
She related this to Caton and Caton in turn explained the idea of Locks for Love, donating hair to cancer patients in need of wigs.
