‘Leatherheads’ to make bigpremiere in Upstate
Jim Fair, Greer Citizen, Editor

Hollywood 20 General Manager Charles Mazzi said he is expecting record turnouts at his theatres on Woodruff Road. “The biggest single weekend gross we had was when ‘Radio’ opened,” Mazzi said. “We were also the highest gross theatres of any in the U.S. that weekend. We’re expecting a huge turnout the week it opens here.”

Part of the big turnout in Upstate theatres will be premieres scheduled by a Greer and Greenville group.

Greer will be host to a Leatherheads Red Carpet Party on April 4. Erin Williams is co-hosting the premiere where guests will meet at the Camelot theatre at 6:45 p.m. at 48 E. Antrim Drive, near the University Center on Pleasantburg Drive, then drive to downtown Greer for a red carpet party at The Davenport at 230 Trade Street.

“Our historic downtown co-starred in what is sure to be a blockbuster Hollywood film,” Williams said. “We wanted to celebrate that fact, and it’s a good opportunity to support a worthy cause.”

The cost for the movie and party in Greer is $75. Guests will be served champagne, wine, beer and hors d’oeuvres donated by downtown restaurants. Music will be from the “Leatherheads” soundtrack and a band to be named.

After viewing the movie at the Camelot Cinemas, party-goers will proceed to The Davenport in Historic Greer, where they will walk the red carpet and pause for paparazzi and an interview by two “Hollywood Celebrities” portrayed by Allison Lister and Jane Hawkins.

In Greenville, Mandy Haley has organized an extravagant Red Carpet Hollywood Gala Premiere that will begin with musical entertainment, demonstrations by make-up artists and Italian hair stylist, Domenic Stalteri, who has served presidents, movie stars and other celebrities.

The festivities at Hollywood 20 will begin at 5 p.m. and last through the party that will be held at the BMW Zentrum after the movie. Popular upstate chef Sammy Ridgeway, owner of Ribault St. Catering, will provide the hors d’oeuvres and beverages.
The cost is $35 per person to attend all the premiere festivities. Tickets to the movie only are $10.

“I think we’ve done an excellent job keeping our costs down so spouses can bring their children and friends,” Haley said. “We have gotten a lot of help from our community and sponsors and we are using our Web site (www.theleatherheads.com) to promote them and maintain daily communication with all the extras.”

Haley said part of the success is attributed to WSPA-TV partnering with her group. “We’re looking forward to Jack Roper and Kimberly Kelly being here and emceeing the premiere. They will provide some other surprises at the event,” Haley said.

The event at Hollywood 20 will have a 100-foot red carpet from the curb to the theatre doors. “We’re going to have Vintage cars, bands at the theatre and party and entertainment for the people who arrive inside the theatre early,” Haley said. “This is not just going to be a walk on the red carpet, see the movie and enjoy a nice party. We’re making this one of the best premiere events ever done in the state. We’ve invited people from the South Carolina film commission to show them our support when movies are produced in the Upstate. ”

Haley said her group also will be handing out ‘Swag Bags’ with some gifts contributed by corporations.

Both events, in Greer and Hollywood 20, are open to the public and both groups are donating proceeds to charities. Greer’s donations will go to the Triune Mercy Center and the Greer Soup Kitchen. The Hollywood 20 group has partnered with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Upstate.

The dress is black tie optional for both premieres. Kelly Myers, mother of the tomato-throwing extra Austin and his brother, David, said they are will be wearing tuxes to the Hollywood 20 event.

At the Greer event, winners of a contest for “Best Hollywood Star” and “Best 1920s attire” will receive a dinner for two at Justin’s and The Cazbah. A drawing for five names will give the winners a ride to and from The Davenport and the Camelot Cinemas in a stretch limo.

Clooney, to the dismay of many, will only be seen on the big screen at theaters across the Upstate. He has prior commitments, including the “Leatherheads” premiere March 28 in Los Angeles.

The movie that was filmed in downtown Greer and other Upstate and North Carolina and Tennessee sites.
