Friends close to the 19-year-old woman who was sexually assaulted on June 8 wanted to do their part in bringing awareness to the attack in the Terra Pines subdivision off East North Street.
Heartstep.org executive director Krista Cogdill said Saturday’s Run 2 Overcome is a way to turn something terrible into something great.
The 5K benefit run/walk is being coordinated with the help of the Greenville Track Club, Eastside cross country coach Ed Boehmke, the Greenville County Sheriff’s office and area churches.
“It is going to be a great thing for the community,” Cogdill said. “We want it to be a voice for victims of violent sex crimes or violent crimes…it’s something that we hope will unify the community.”
Registration the day of the event is 7-9 a.m. The event begins at 9. The start and finish is at the Pavilion off Old Spartanburg Road. Proceeds will be used to support the victim with medical bills and to support a local rape crisis center.
It will pass the site of the attack to symbolize the community will not be overtaken by fear. Participants will not be timed and no awards presented.
“We have had a lot of feedback…it could be a pretty overwhelming turnout,” Cogdill said.
The attacker, who is described as a black-male, 20-25 years old between 5-feet-8 and 5-feet-11 with a lean build, was wearing a white tank top and long, baggy, yellow and green plaid shorts at the time of the attack. The suspect is described to have acne scars on both cheeks and pockmarks on his face.
“Our hope is to be sure that anyone in the area would think twice about something like this next time,” Cogdill said.
Participants can register online, paying an early registration fee of $25 or they can register the day of the event for $35.
