Greer High football team placed on probation

By Joel FitzPatrick

The Greer High football team has been placed on probation by the South Carolina High School League.
In being placed on probation, Greer will not be allowed to compete in preseason or postseason games, including Saturday’s FCA Jamboree, and for the time being, every player on the team has been ruled ineligible.  J.L. Mann will replace Greer in the FCA Jamboree, taking on Belton-Honea Path.
“We will appeal everything on either Monday or Tuesday,” Greer Principal Marion Waters said. “The first thing we will do is request restoration of eligibility, which I have never seen not happen. I feel comfortable that every player’s eligibility will be restored.”
On Wednesday, the school received notification from the SCHSL that the team violated the League’s rule of no contact during the first three days of practice.
“On Friday, Greer High conducted its first practice, which was covered by The Greenville News and Geoff Hart of News Channel 4,” Greer High Principal Marion Waters said. “Photographed and recorded were five-on-five and seven-on-seven drills between the offense and defense. Defensive players were wearing shields, which is not against the rules, but there was contact between players. If the players would have just stood there, no violation would have occurred.”
Waters added that the rule has been around for quite some time, and that it is in place to allow the first three days to be used for conditioning and allowing players to get acclimated to the heat.
“The important thing for people to remember is that the High School League is just doing its job. We don’t feel like we were in violation of any rules, and will plea our case early next week.”
